Yoga During Pregnancy: A Trimester-by-Trimester Guide

Yoga can be a safe and supportive practice throughout pregnancy when it is adapted correctly — but pregnancy is not a single state, and what feels right in the first trimester can be unsuitable by the third. Always get your doctor's clearance before starting or continuing yoga during pregnancy.

First trimester: Energy and nausea levels can vary a lot day to day. Gentle breathing practices and light movement are usually the focus, with any pose that compresses the abdomen avoided.

Second trimester: Often the most comfortable phase for practice. This is typically when strength and hip-opening work is introduced, always avoiding lying flat on the back for extended periods as the pregnancy progresses.

Third trimester: Balance shifts as the body changes, so wall or prop-supported poses become more useful, and the focus generally moves toward breathing techniques and gentle positioning that can support labor preparation.

Across every trimester, deep twists, strong backbends, hot yoga, and any pose risking a fall should be avoided. A trainer trained specifically in prenatal yoga will know how to adapt session by session as your body changes — this is not a practice to learn from a generic video.
