Yoga for Back Pain: What Actually Helps

Lower back pain from poor posture, long hours at a desk, or general muscle tightness is one of the most common reasons people come to yoga. Used carefully, yoga can help — but "carefully" is the key word.

What tends to help: gentle mobility work like Cat-Cow, supported Child's Pose, and knee-to-chest stretches, along with core-strengthening postures that support the spine rather than strain it. Consistency matters more than intensity — a short daily routine outperforms one long, aggressive session.

What to be cautious with: deep forward folds, unsupported backbends, and any twist or pose that causes sharp or radiating pain (especially pain that travels down a leg) should be avoided or heavily modified. Pain that is sharp, sudden, or radiating is a signal to stop, not push through.

Before starting any new routine for back pain, especially if the pain is recent, severe, or radiating, check with a doctor first to rule out an underlying issue that yoga could worsen. Once cleared, a trainer experienced in therapeutic or corrective yoga can build a sequence specific to your condition, rather than a generic one that may not suit you.
